The RMS Titanic and Modern Cruise Ships
The RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that was built with the hopes to transport people from the U.K. and Europe to North America where they planned to start a new life. It was the largest ship built at its time and only the wealthiest people could afford a ticket.
After it set out on April 10, 1912, tragedy struck just four days later, as you know the story. The ship hit an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean, killing 1,178 passengers and crew members, slightly more than half of the people on board.
But the majestic ship’s size is tiny in comparison to today’s cruise liners. Today, a typical cruise liner holds 6,296 guests and 2,384 crew members, compared to 2,435 guests and 892 crew members. Today’s’ ships span a total of 1,187 feet long and 235 feet above sea level compared to 882 feet long and 175 feet above sea level.
